Over the weekend, the Ann Arbor Police Department found themselves in an unusual pursuit. They were chasing down a
forklift, driven by a 12-year-old child. This incident has caught attention due to its unique circumstances.

Stolen Forklift Reported Near Local Middle School

The pursuit began after the department received a call reporting a stolen forklift near a local middle school. The
police quickly located the vehicle, which was driving at a speed of approximately 15 to 20 mph (24-32 km/h).

Construction Genie GTH-636 Telehandler Used in the Chase

The stolen forklift was identified as a Construction Genie GTH-636 Telehandler, weighing up to 35,000 pounds. The
key to the forklift was hidden inside the cab, making it difficult for the police to slow down the vehicle due to
its weight and front attachment.

Police Warned of Danger Posed by Forklift Attachment

In a video of the incident, police can be heard warning each other to stay away from the front of the vehicle due
to the danger posed by the forklift attachment. The Ann Arbor Police Department chased the boy from 6:45 p.m.
until around 7:20 p.m., when he left the city limits via the M-14 bridge. The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office
then took over the pursuit.

No Injuries Reported, but Damage to Cars and Road Signs

The chase finally came to an end just before 8:00 p.m. when the boy stopped the forklift. Fortunately, no injuries
were reported as a result of the joyride. However, approximately 10 parked cars were damaged, and several road
signs were knocked down.

Investigation and Juvenile Detention

The Ann Arbor Police Department stated that this was a very dangerous situation that could have resulted in serious
injuries. The incident remains an active and ongoing criminal investigation. Following the chase, the 12-year-old
boy was lodged at a juvenile detention center. Due to his status as a minor, his identity has not been disclosed.
