The Datsun 280 ZXR: A Rare Homologation Special

The Soft Spot in the Z Car Lineup

While the original Datsun 240Z from 1969 and its Z32-code 300ZX descendant that debuted 20 years later are celebrated as performance icons and true driver’s cars, the models from the late 1970s were often criticized for being too soft and heavy. These models were built before turbocharging was introduced to enhance their performance.

The ZXR: A Hidden Gem

However, even during this period, the Z car proved its worth on the racetrack, securing SCCA and IMSA wins that ultimately contributed to its success in the showroom. One of the lesser-known gems from this era is the Datsun 280 ZXR, a rare homologation special that many people have never even heard of.

Unassuming Power

The ZXR wasn’t drastically different from a stock 280ZX of its time. It featured the same 2.8-liter, SOHC, inline-six engine producing 135 horsepower. While the actual racers had more power, the street version maintained a similar performance level. The interior design, including the flat seats and unremarkable two-spoke steering wheel, didn’t necessarily inspire excitement in serious drivers.

A Unique Appearance

What set the ZXR apart were its eye-catching graphics and, most notably, its large rear spoiler. The rear wing was added to homologate the special feature for racing purposes. Datsun had to produce a minimum of 1,000 cars with this modification to meet the track requirements, and they ended up building 1,001 (some sources say 1,009) street-legal ZXRs. Each owner had to pay an additional $399 on top of the cost of a regular 280ZX.

A Rare Find

Due to its limited production run and the ZX’s susceptibility to moisture damage, the Datsun 280 ZXR is a rare sight on the roads today. The car featured in these pictures is practically brand new, having only covered 15 miles since its delivery to St. Yves Motor Sales in Berkley, Massachusetts. It was part of the St. Yves Collection and will be up for auction at Mecum’s Kissimmee sale in January. If you’re interested in experiencing the downforce properties of this historic rear spoiler, keep an eye out for this unique opportunity.
