Own a Piece of Steve McQueen History with This 1970 Chevrolet K5 Blazer

Introduction

Steve McQueen, the legendary actor and racer, purchased this 1970 Chevrolet K5 Blazer in 1969 as one of four support vehicles for the Baja 1000 race. Now, this iconic vehicle is up for sale and will be auctioned at Mecum’s Indy sale on May 17.

Steve McQueen’s Connection

Steve McQueen, known for his love of motorsport, bought this SUV through his company, Solar Productions. The vehicle was specially tuned to help him compete in the 1970 Baja 1000 race, although it was not used as a race vehicle but as a support vehicle.

Unique Features

Despite not being a competition vehicle, the K5 Blazer was equipped with Positraction differentials in the front and rear, along with a four-headlight grille from a Jimmy for better off-road illumination. This customization allowed it to handle the rugged terrains of the Baja peninsula.

Ownership History

After McQueen’s race team liquidated the vehicles following a DNF in the race, the K5 Blazer was purchased by Bob Bianchi in 1971. Bianchi used it for a road trip and as a family car until 2001 before sparingly using it on weekends in Big Bear, California.

Upcoming Auction

With 81,235 miles on the odometer, this Citrus Green-painted Blazer will be auctioned at Mecum’s Indy 2024 sale on May 17. The vehicle comes with a 350 cubic-inch V8 engine, TH350 automatic transmission, and factory air conditioning. Don’t miss the chance to own a piece of Steve McQueen history!
