2023 Cadillac CT4 Review: The Ultimate BMW Alternative?

2023 Cadillac CT4 Review: The Cure for the Common Bimmer

Last week, I wrote about a BMW 3-Series that reminded me of Bimmers of the past, both in terms of being fun to drive and its affordability. However, the 2023 Cadillac CT4 heard that and said, “hold my beer.” While it may not be as dynamically sound as the BMW, the CT4 offers a thrilling driving experience that makes it worth considering.

Driving Dynamics

The Cadillac CT4 may not feel as light on its feet as the BMW, but it handles well enough to make you pause and think about it. The 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine under the hood (310 horsepower, 350 lb-ft of torque with premium fuel) provides ample power to keep up with traffic. Additionally, the handling is dialed in well enough to make driving this car a joy, especially on curvy roads. While there are other sport-luxury sedans that offer better performance, the CT4 holds its own and surprises with its capabilities.

Comfort and Interior

On the downside, the CT4 falls short in terms of creature comfort and interior quality. The materials below the beltline feel cheap for a car that has a price tag of over $50,000. Additionally, the cabin lacks the special feel that one would expect from a Cadillac. The interior quarters, especially in the rear, feel cramped. Another design choice that leaves me confounded is the placement of the infotainment screen on top of the center stack.

SuperCruise and Pricing

One notable feature of the CT4 is SuperCruise, a semi-autonomous, hands-free driving system. While my experience with it was limited, it generally worked well. However, it comes at a steep price of $7,700 for the package, which also includes navigation, Bose audio, a climate package, and a technology package. It’s worth mentioning that SuperCruise requires a subscription. All-wheel drive adds another $2,000, and the 2.7-liter turbo engine costs an additional $2,500. Unfortunately, these add-ons increase the price of the CT4, making it less competitive against the BMW.

Base Features and Safety

The base price of the CT4 is $38,995 and includes features such as 18-inch wheels, performance suspension, satellite radio, remote start, dual-zone climate control, LED headlamps and taillamps, keyless entry and starting, leather seats, wireless cell phone charging, and adaptive cruise control. In terms of safety, the CT4 comes equipped with forward-collision alert, front-pedestrian braking, front and rear park assist, teen driver software, enhanced automatic emergency braking, lane-change alert with side blind-zone alert, following-distance indicator, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Conclusion

While the CT4 may not be the cure for the common BMW, it doesn’t have to be. It stands on its own as a very good Cadillac. Despite some flaws in terms of interior quality and space, the CT4 offers an engaging driving experience that makes it a worthy contender in the compact luxury/sport sedan market. Although it may not sway BMW enthusiasts away from their beloved brand, the CT4 holds its own and satisfies those looking for a thrilling sedan.

In conclusion, the 2023 Cadillac CT4 is a compelling option for those seeking a luxury sedan with impressive performance. While it may not match the driving dynamics of a BMW, it offers enough excitement to make it a satisfying choice. With a few improvements in interior quality and space, the CT4 could truly shine as a top contender in its class.
