2023 Ford Maverick Tremor: A Review of Keeping Character Intact

Introduction

The 2023 Ford Maverick Tremor trim level may seem unnecessary for some. However, the Maverick is already an impressive vehicle on its own, making the addition of the Tremor package feel like overkill, especially for those who don’t go off-road. While some Maverick owners may venture onto trails, it’s likely to be a small percentage. Most drivers, like myself during my week-long test, will primarily stick to paved roads.

Tremor Package Features

For those who do opt for the Tremor package, they will receive a suspension specifically tuned for off-roading, with different shocks and springs compared to other trim levels. The ride height is increased, and additional features include Trail Control (an off-road version of cruise control), front skid plates, a locking electronic rear differential, a twin-clutch rear drive unit, off-road gauges, a heavy-duty transmission cooler, a trailer hitch, full-size spare, 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, a revised front bumper for improved approach angle, front tow hooks, and various interior and exterior markings with orange accents. The Tremor package also comes in Avalanche Gray.

Unchanged Maverick Experience

Despite the Tremor package additions, the overall Maverick experience remains unchanged. It continues to be a small truck with car-like characteristics that excels at performing truck tasks. The increased ride height and all-terrain tires have minimal impact on ride quality, handling, and tire noise. The Maverick still rides and handles well, making it a driver’s truck.

Tremor Off-Road Capability

Unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to test the Tremor’s off-road capabilities. However, with its off-road-focused features and enhancements, it’s likely to perform well in off-road conditions.

Engine Performance and Handling

The tested Maverick Tremor came equipped with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, which offers responsive acceleration suitable for suburban driving. The steering is well-tuned, although it can feel slightly artificial at times. Overall, the Maverick Tremor remains a driver-focused truck.

Interior and Features

The interior of the Maverick Tremor maintains its functional design, although there are some areas where material quality could be improved. Nonetheless, it offers a comfortable and well-designed cabin that makes traffic more enjoyable. The inclusion of physical radio and HVAC knobs is a welcome feature. The Tremor Package is available on the XLT trim level, which includes features such as a locking tailgate, LED headlamps, cruise control, single-zone A/C, USB A and C ports, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, and a rearview camera.

Pricing and Options

In addition to the basic Tremor Package, there is also a Tremor Package with Appearance available. The basic Tremor package costs around $3,000, while opting for Tremor with Appearance adds an additional $4,490. This upgraded package includes hood/lower body cladding graphics and a carbonized roof (additional features are available for the Lariat base truck). Other optional features include Ford’s Co-Pilot 360, splash guards, and a spray-in bedliner. The tested Maverick Tremor with options had an out-the-door price of $34,207.

Conclusion

For most individuals, the regular Maverick will suffice. However, for those who have a need for light off-roading or simply desire the Tremor package’s aesthetics, it won’t detract from the Maverick’s already impressive on-road performance or utility. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and specific requirements.
