The automotive industry is facing unprecedented challenges as it pushes forward in various directions at an unprecedented pace. With so many possibilities and technologies to explore, car makers’ technical heads have the difficult task of deciding where to invest their research and development (R&D) budgets. In the Power List 2023, sponsored by Keyloop, we celebrate the individuals who are making these tough decisions and shaping the future of the automotive industry.

One of the key figures in the automotive industry is Thomas Schmall, a member of the Volkswagen AG Board of Management responsible for Technology and CEO of Volkswagen Group Components. Schmall’s main focus is on the development and production of battery cells and systems across the entire VW Group. This is a crucial task as it will define the next era of the group’s multiple brands, from affordable electric hatchbacks to long-distance vehicles equipped with solid-state batteries.

Ned Curic, the chief engineering and technology officer at Stellantis, is another influential figure in the industry. Curic made headlines last year when he turned down Google’s offer to provide infotainment systems for Stellantis cars. Instead, he aims to create unique experiences through the upcoming SmartCockpit digital platforms, which will be lighter and more tailored to Stellantis vehicles than existing systems.

Gilles Le Borgne, the Executive Vice President of Engineering at Groupe Renault, is recognized as one of France’s leading experts in vehicle engineering and design. Since joining Renault in 2020, Le Borgne has significantly reduced model development times and engineering costs, ensuring the company’s survival. With the launch of the electric 5 hatchback and 4 SUV, Renault has a busy few years ahead.

Frank Weber, the board member for development at BMW, is responsible for overseeing the development of new models and technologies. Weber joined BMW in 2011 after gaining experience at GM in Europe. His expertise in engineering management has been instrumental in the success of BMW’s top-end models and Rolls-Royce.

Markus Schafer, the head of R&D and Mercedes COO, holds crucial positions at Mercedes-Benz as the company transitions into an electric vehicle (EV) powerhouse. Schafer oversees development and purchasing, ensuring the success of the growing EQ range. With his extensive experience at Mercedes-Benz, including heading its US operations, Schafer is well-equipped to drive the company’s EV transformation.

Doug Field, the Chief Advanced Product Development and Technology Officer at Ford, has an impressive track record in the industry. He was the chief engineer behind Tesla’s Model 3 and previously led Apple’s self-driving car program. Field’s expertise will be crucial in future-proofing Ford’s models with advanced connectivity and infotainment systems, as well as introducing next-level autonomous systems.

Doug L. Parks, responsible for Global Product Development, Purchasing, and Supply Chain at GM, played a key role in launching GM’s Super Cruise system and leading the engineering of the Cruise AV driverless concept. Parks is now overseeing the roll-out of a new generation of electric cars at GM and collaborating with Honda on low-cost platform-sharing EVs.

Masahiko Maeda, the chief technology officer at Toyota, is a driving force behind Toyota’s rapid electrification push. With his extensive experience at Toyota, Maeda is leading the development of 30 EVs from Toyota and Lexus by 2030. He also heads Toyota’s ZEV Factory, which focuses on product and business planning for EVs.
