Introduction

Our pets can say a lot about who we are as a person. Take dogs as just one very clear example of that. Why does one individual have a Great Dane while another prefers a pup that can fit in a purse? Often, the breed they have connects to something intrinsic inside of them.

Our cars as an extension of ourselves

Our cars can indicate a lot about who we are as well. They can tell others how we view ourselves, what types of things we value, and even about aspirations we might have. After over a week of piloting the Ford Bronco around Colorado, we’ve figured out something about it: it’s an absolute beast and it deserves an owner that’s every bit as hardcore as it is.

Powertrain

Our test vehicle was a Bronco Everglades trim. Ford offers three different engines in the Bronco lineup but the Everglades is only available with the lowliest of the trio. That means it comes standard with a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 300 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. It sends that power to a ten-speed automatic gearbox and then onto all four wheels.

Interior

The Everglades trim is especially focused on real off-road usability. The dash, door cards, and switchgear are designed to be rugged and tough. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, but the rear window won’t open until the door is about 90 degrees open. The wind noise inside the Bronco can be noticeable, and the rear storage space is limited when the rear seats are up.

Tech

The Bronco comes with a 12-inch infotainment system that is quick, intuitive, and logically laid out. The driver information screen is good, but the Bronco Everglades doesn’t come with trail cams like the Badlands trim. The Bronco also features a seven-speaker audio system and several driver modes for off-road adventures.

Drive Impressions

The Bronco shines brightly off-road, easily handling rough terrains and obstacles. It offers on-demand electronically locking differentials for additional grip and confidence. However, the Bronco can be noisy on the road, and the tires tend to pick up rocks and stones, causing loud pops and bangs. Despite its off-road capabilities, the Bronco is not as sharp or engaging to drive on pavement.

Verdict

The Ford Bronco Everglades is a rugged and capable SUV that is best suited for off-road enthusiasts. It may not be the most comfortable or fuel-efficient option, but it offers unmatched off-road performance. However, its high price tag makes it a tough sell for those who don’t prioritize off-roading. For everyday use, the Bronco Sport may be a better choice.
