2024 Genesis G70 Upgrading Base Engine

Genesis has announced that it will be updating its G70 model for the South Korean market by replacing the current 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 2.5-liter unit found in the Kia Stinger. This new engine produces 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque in the Kia, which suggests that the 2024 model year will be more powerful for the G70. Although the manufacturer has not yet confirmed whether this change will also apply to North America, it is unlikely that they would leave us with the less powerful 252-hp turbocharged four-cylinder. It is expected that the 2.5-liter turbo will replace it as standard equipment or be offered as an option, while the 365-hp V6 will remain for decked-out versions of the G70.

Rumors suggest that the G70 will also receive another facelift before a second generation arrives in 2026, which may include streamlined HVAC controls. However, integrating physical controls into the touchscreen has not been well received in the past. The car will have standard ventilated front seats, heated seats all around, and a frameless rear-view mirror with some new interior trim colors, as well as new exterior paint options. Brembo brakes, previously reserved for the 3.3T, will also become standard hardware for the G70, hidden behind all-new 18 and 19-inch wheel designs.

Assuming pricing does not change significantly (the 2023 model year starts at $40,245) and Genesis brings the shooting brake to our shores, the G70 is an attractive option for those seeking an oddball underdog, performance value, and luxury bargain. While the G70 may not be for everyone, it checks a lot of boxes and Genesis seems interested in sweetening the pot. However, the 3.3T is still probably the one to get for those seeking a value alternative to something like a BMW M340i.

It is expected that a formal announcement will be made later this summer that should answer any lingering questions. Genesis enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting news of the G70’s updates and are excited to see what the future holds for this innovative and stylish vehicle.
