Lancia Ypsilon: Redesign and EV Launch in 2024

Lancia Ypsilon Teaser

Introduction

After twelve years on the market, the Lancia Ypsilon is in desperate need of a redesign. Fortunately, the wait is almost over as the new iteration of this premium subcompact is set to debut in February 2024. The highly anticipated launch will feature the EV-only Edizione Limitata Cassina, which has been showcased in the initial official teaser.

Unveiling the Silhouette

Lancia has released several images of a covered full-size model, giving us a glimpse of the Ypsilon’s silhouette and the distinct contour of the hood. We expect the new lighting signature to be positioned on the hood, adding to the car’s stylish appearance.

The Tavolino Concept

The teaser video focuses on the “tavolino,” which is Lancia’s term for the circular-shaped element between the front seats. In the Edizione Limitata Cassina, this structure resembles a coffee table and is upholstered in a leather-like material, surrounded by an aluminum-style trim. Lancia states that the tavolino strongly reflects the brand’s concept of a home-like feeling.

Collaboration with Cassina

The special edition Ypsilon was developed in collaboration with Cassina, an Italian company specializing in high-end furniture. Cassina has previously worked with Lancia on the Pu+Ra HPE concept. Limited to 1,906 numbered examples, the Ypsilon Edizione Limitata Cassina pays homage to Lancia’s founding date and celebrates its 117th anniversary.

Stellantis Underpinnings and Powertrain Options

The Lancia Ypsilon will ride on Stellantis underpinnings, similar to other superminis and B-SUVs within the group. While the Cassina special edition will be exclusively offered as an EV, the Ypsilon will also be available with mild-hybrid powertrains. This allows the model to serve as both Lancia’s first EV and the last ICE-powered offering before the brand transitions to an EV-only lineup in 2028.

Future Plans and Expansion

The Lancia Ypsilon is expected to be a key model in the company’s 10-year Renaissance strategic plan. Starting in summer 2024, the all-new third generation Ypsilon will be available throughout Europe, marking the beginning of Lancia’s expansion. Production of the supermini is set to take place in Zaragoza, Spain, alongside the Opel Corsa. Lancia’s single-model range will further expand with the Gamma electric crossover flagship in 2026, followed by the Delta electric hatchback in 2028.

Conclusion

While the official debut of the redesigned Lancia Ypsilon is still a few months away, Lancia promises to unveil more details about the model in the coming weeks. With its stylish design, EV capabilities, and strategic plans for the future, the Ypsilon is set to make a significant impact in the subcompact car market.
