Volkswagen Golf R: Final Pure-Petrol Iteration to Receive Styling Updates and Interior Tech Makeover

Introduction

The highly anticipated final petrol-powered Volkswagen Golf R is set to be launched next year. Recently, spy shots of the Golf R lapping the Nürburgring in both hatchback and estate forms have surfaced, giving us a glimpse of the upcoming range-topper. The Golf R will join the standard Golf range and the GTI version in receiving a series of styling updates and an interior makeover as part of an extensive facelift for the ‘Mk8.5’ model generation.

Powertrain

The current Mk8 Golf R is equipped with Volkswagen’s familiar EA288 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, producing 316bhp and 310lb ft of torque. While there is no confirmation yet, it is possible that the revised version may receive a power boost, considering the Golf R 333 special edition launched earlier this year was upgraded to 328bhp.

Exterior Styling

The spy photographs of the Golf R hint at subtle exterior styling revisions. Similar to other Mk8.5 models, the R will feature slimmer headlights and a slightly larger reworked lower bumper. The test car spotted at the Nürburgring showcased 19-inch wheels, a large rear wing, and an Akrapovič titanium exhaust, similar to Performance Pack models.

Interior Tech Makeover

Volkswagen aims to address the usability and reliability issues that plagued the Mk8 Golf’s infotainment system since its launch. The interior of the Golf R will undergo a significant makeover, including a new 12.9-inch touchscreen as standard and a 10.4-inch digital instrument display. Additionally, a 15-inch infotainment screen may be offered as an optional upgrade. The revised infotainment system, which will debut in the new Passat and Tiguan, will feature revamped software with simplified menu structures and faster response times. Volkswagen will also introduce light-up touch-sensitive sliders for the climate control and audio volume, addressing a major criticism of the Mk8 Golf.

Release Date

The Mk8.5 Golf is expected to arrive early next year, with the Golf R likely to follow a few months later. This final petrol-powered iteration of the Golf will mark the end of an era, as the ninth generation Golf is set to go fully electric upon its arrival in 2028.

With its styling updates, interior tech makeover, and powerful performance, the final petrol-powered Volkswagen Golf R is poised to impress enthusiasts and solidify its position as a top contender in the hot hatch segment.
