Introduction

Audi has recently revealed the latest version of its best-selling model, the Q5 SUV. This vehicle, which accounted for 17% (334,480) of Audi’s global sales last year, will play a crucial role in the brand’s transition from combustion engines to electric cars. Unlike the new A5 saloon and A5 Avant estate, the third-generation Audi Q5 will not be available with a pure combustion engine. Instead, it will initially offer a range of mild hybrid options, with plug-in hybrids set to join the lineup in the future.

Powertrain Options

The launch range of the new Audi Q5 includes a 2.0-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder engine that delivers 201bhp and 251lb ft of torque to the front wheels. Four-wheel drive is available as an option. There is also a diesel variant with the same capacity and power output, but with a 44lb ft torque advantage and four-wheel drive as standard. The range-topping SQ5 model features a new mild-hybrid 3.0-litre turbo petrol V6 engine with 362bhp, offering a 20bhp increase compared to its predecessor. In the following year, Audi plans to introduce two plug-in hybrid versions with 295bhp and 362bhp, both offering an electric-only range of around 50 miles.

Transition to Electric Cars

Audi’s decision to invest in hybrid powertrains is a result of the longer-than-expected transition to electric cars. However, the brand remains committed to phasing out internal combustion engine (ICE) cars in eight years. This means that the third-generation Q5 will be the last non-electric model in its lineup. Audi has also pledged to offer a hybrid option in each segment until the complete transition to electric vehicles.

Premium Platform Combustion (PPC)

The new Audi Q5 is built on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), which represents a significant upgrade over the previous MLB Evo platform. The PPC offers improved electrical architecture, including a complete wiring overhaul and the use of five on-board computers. This upgrade provides Audi with more flexibility to offer hybrids with different configurations and opens the door to future upgrades. The platform can support range-extender powertrains and accommodate a V8 engine, hinting at the future of larger Audi models like the Q7 and the possibility of a new RS model.

Improved Comfort and Technology

In addition to the technical enhancements, the new Q5 features improved ride comfort and handling. The standard configuration includes steel springs and passive dampers, with the option of air suspension. The interior of the Q5 has also been updated, adopting Audi’s new ‘Digital Stage’ setup, which includes an 11.9-inch digital instrument display and a 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen. An optional 10.9-inch touchscreen is available for the front passenger.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing for the new Audi Q5 in the UK has not yet been announced. However, the first cars are expected to arrive in showrooms in March. In mainland Europe, the entry-level petrol variant is priced at €52,300 (£44,300), the diesel variant at €57,100 (£48,400), and the SQ5 at €82,900 (£70,200).

Upcoming Audi Q5 Sportback

Audi Q5 Sportback prototype

A coupé-roofed Sportback version of the new Q5 is set to be released shortly after the regular SUV. Prototypes with plug-in hybrid powertrains have been spotted testing in Germany, indicating that the new engine and body options could be introduced simultaneously. The Sportback variant is expected to offer slightly better fuel economy and improved electric-only range, albeit with reduced boot space and a slight increase in price.
