Ford Introduces the Plug-In Hybrid Ranger
Ford introduced the plug-in hybrid version of the Ranger midsize truck at the 2024 IAA Transportation in Hannover, exactly one year after announcing the electrified model. The Ranger PHEV retains the towing, payload, and off-road credentials of its non-electrified counterparts, while adding the benefit of a zero-emission driving mode and a PHEV-exclusive Stormtrak trim.
Powerful and Efficient Powertrain
Starting with the electrified powertrain, it comprises the turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine with a single 101 hp electric motor housed within the transmission’s bellhousing. The combined output is 275 hp and 690 Nm of torque, outperforming the gasoline and diesel models from the standard Ranger lineup (excluding the Raptor).
Impressive Electric Range and Charging Capabilities
The PHEV setup includes an 11.8 kWh battery pack, allowing a target EV-only range of 45 km. According to Ford, a full charge of the battery can be completed in less than four hours. The PHEV also features regenerative braking and an uprated Pro Power Onboard system, providing power for tools, electronic devices, or camping trailers.
Off-Road Capabilities and Payload
Power is transmitted to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox and an e-4WD system. The PHEV retains the 1-tonne payload and can tow up to 3,500 kg, just like the non-electrified Ranger.
Exclusive Stormtrak Launch Edition
The Ranger Stormtrak launch edition is exclusive to the PHEV and features unique styling touches and generous equipment. Highlights include a new set of 18-inch alloy wheels, a new honeycomb pattern on the grille, and a decal set. The pickup also comes standard with Matrix LED headlights and the Flexible Rack System at the back.
Comfort and Technology
The interior of the Ranger PHEV boasts high-quality materials, a 10-speaker B&O sound system, and a 360-degree camera on the 12-inch infotainment touchscreen.
Availability and Pricing
The Ford Ranger PHEV will be manufactured at the Silverton plant in South Africa and will be available in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. The first deliveries are scheduled to commence in spring 2025, and pricing will be announced closer to the market launch.
