“2025 VW Golf R: 329 HP and Aggressive Design”

The New VW Golf R: A Powerful Upgrade

Striking Design of the Mk8.5 Golf R

  • The Mk8.5 Golf R is still camouflaged but boasts a more striking appearance compared to its predecessor.
  • European specifications have been revealed, while details about the U.S. model are yet to be disclosed.
  • The new Golf R accelerates from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 4.6 seconds.

Volkswagen is gearing up for the launch of the updated Mk8.5 Golf R and has shared new details about the model following a test drive event with journalists in Germany. The highlight of this model is its status as the most powerful Golf R ever produced.

Like its predecessor, the mid-life update of the Mk8 Golf R will be equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. However, VW has boosted its output to 329 hp (from 316 hp), maintaining torque at 310 lb-ft (420 Nm). While the U.S.-spec model details are pending, these figures apply to the European variant.

VW will exclusively offer the new Golf R with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission, delivering power to all four wheels. The updated hot hatch achieves a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 4.6 seconds, while the wagon variant (not available in the U.S.) requires 4.8 seconds. In Europe, a Performance Package will be offered, increasing the top speed to 168 mph (270 km/h).

The enhancements extend beyond the engine to include a revised suspension setup that lowers the Mk8.5 by an inch compared to its predecessor. Dynamic Chassis Control adaptive suspension comes standard, along with a retained drift mode that can allocate up to 100% of power to the rear wheels. Standard torque vectoring enhances performance.

All recent prototypes of the new Golf R have been spotted in vibrant blue camouflage, concealing the updated design. While the visual changes are not drastic, they are noticeable. Updates to the front and rear bumpers, revised LED headlights and taillights, and a modernized cabin featuring a 12.9-inch infotainment display and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster are among the highlights. An optional head-up display will also be available.
