Futuristic Design

As Kia expands its electric vehicle lineup, it is venturing into the passenger and light commercial van sector with purpose-built models known as Platform Beyond Vehicles (PBVs). These models are part of Kia’s push towards a versatile and electrified future.

Kia’s Electric Van Lineup

Kia previewed its electric van strategy at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show with three concept models: the PV1, PV5, and PV7. The mid-size PV5 will be the first to hit production in South Korea in 2025, followed by the smaller PV1 and larger PV7. All three models will feature a unified design language.

Futuristic Design

The production-ready PV5 will retain the concept’s design language showcased at CES. It features a futuristic look with geometrical shapes, hard creases, and flat surfacing. Key design highlights include cascading DRLs, a two-tone front end, and angular fenders. At the rear, it has slender LED tail lights and barn-style doors.

Practicality Plus

The PV5 offers versatility and user-focused design. It comes in basic (passenger) and van (delivery) models, with a high-roof variant for extra cargo space. The PV5’s flexible architecture allows for interchangeable configurations, including camper, taxi, and cab-chassis setups. The passenger variant offers moveable seating and advanced connectivity, while the delivery van maximizes cargo space with low, easy access and loading features.

Electric Motion

The PV5 will have an all-electric powertrain, although specific details have yet to be revealed. It will leverage the latest battery technology to offer a competitive range and efficient performance. The PV5 is expected to share components with other electric models in Kia’s lineup, including dual-motor versions. It will also offer Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) compatibility.

Rivals and Reveal

The PV5 will face competition from electric vans like Ford’s E-Transit, Mercedes-Benz’s eVito, and Volkswagen’s ID.Buzz Cargo. Production of the PV5 is scheduled to begin next year at Kia’s new Hwaseong plant in South Korea. However, PV5 models destined for the US and Canadian markets may be assembled in Mexico to avoid hefty tariffs. Following the PV5, Kia plans to introduce the smaller PV1 and larger PV7 to expand its electric van lineup.
