Mercedes to Unveil Electric G-Class and Baby G-Wagen at Auto China Show
Introduction
Mercedes has confirmed the debut of its first-ever electric G-Class at the upcoming Auto China show in Beijing. Alongside this, the German automaker is also working on a smaller ‘baby’ G-Wagen.
Development of the Baby G-Wagen
The idea of a smaller G-Class was first revealed after the electric Concept CLA Class debut in 2023. Mercedes’ Chief Technology Officer Markus Schäfer emphasized the global recognition of the G-Class nameplate and proposed expanding the lineup to include a ‘little G.’
Exclusive Electric Powertrain
Schäfer confirmed that the upcoming model will exclusively feature an electric powertrain, following the footsteps of the electric CLA. While specific details are yet to be disclosed, it is speculated that the Little G will share powertrain components with the CLA.
Platform and Range
The Little G will not use the MMA platform but will be underpinned by a different architecture to offer true off-roading capabilities. Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) will provide two battery options, promising a range exceeding 466 miles (750 km).
Exterior and Interior Design
The baby G-Class is expected to inherit styling cues from its larger counterpart, maintaining a boxy and utilitarian appearance with modern enhancements. The interior will blend luxury with high-tech features similar to the refreshed G-Class.
Release Date and Pricing
While the release date remains undisclosed, analysts predict production to start in late 2026 with sales launching in early 2027. The pricing is expected to target a luxury audience, with estimates starting at $60,000.
Conclusion
Mercedes’ foray into electric SUVs with the G-Class and Baby G-Wagen signifies a shift towards sustainable mobility without compromising on luxury and performance.
