Volvo’s S60 to be Replaced by All-Electric ES60 Sedan

Volvo’s recent decision to discontinue the S60 compact luxury sedan in North America may have disappointed many fans of the Swedish brand, but it paves the way for a more electrified future. The South Carolina plant that produced the S60 will assemble the all-new EX90 electric SUV instead.

However, there’s a glimmer of hope for the BMW 3 Series rival. Reports from Reuters early last year suggest that the Swedish automaker is developing an all-new replacement for the S60 and S90 sedan as part of its electrification push.

Scandinavian Flair

Our study exemplifies Scandinavian elegance, harmonizing nature’s ‘golden ratio’ with influences from the EX30 SUV and Polestar 5 to help shape this futuristic sedan. The front fascia is dominated by an aerodynamic shield that replaces the traditional grille, high-definition 1.3-megapixel ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights, and a scalloped frunk.

Notably, a LiDAR unit for autonomous driving is integrated high up on the roof, and the side profile features strong proportions, including muscular haunches, flush window glazing, and door handles to ensure uninterrupted airflow towards the rear. Out back, it sports an integrated spoiler and OLED taillamps that frame the sharply chiseled bumper and outboard air ducts.

Cabin Comforts

Inside, the ES60 will undoubtedly offer a blend of luxury and cutting-edge technology. Much like Volvo’s other recent offerings and especially the EX90, the spacious cabin is expected to feature a modern, slim instrument panel and wide-fin air vents, creating a spacious and airy atmosphere. The use of illuminated natural wood and other natural materials, such as wool blends and textiles, reflects Volvo’s commitment to sustainability.

Digital highlights could include a large, EX90-inspired portrait-style 15-inch touchscreen that provides intuitive control over the car’s functions and a digital key that initiates an illuminated welcome sequence using the front and rear lights, enhancing the user experience from the moment you approach the car.

The EV Switch

Built on the SPA2 platform, the ES60 will be a powerhouse of electric efficiency. It may employ up to 111kWh of lithium-ion battery capacity, powering a pair of electric motors that produce over 402 hp (300kW) and 910Nm of torque.

Volvo’s large-capacity battery should offer a range of 373 miles (600km) on the WLTP cycle, making it ideal for long-distance travel. Moreover, it supports DC fast charging, enabling the battery to go from 10% to 80% in less than 30 minutes. This combination of range and fast charging will ensure the ES60 is as practical as it is powerful.

Rivals and Reveal

Key rivals include BMW’s upcoming Neue Klasse i3 and i4, the electric Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz EQC sedan, Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, BYD Seal, and higher-end trims of the Hyundai Ioniq 6.

While there’s no official launch date, industry insiders speculate that an electric S60 could arrive in late 2025 or 2026.
