2024 Kia Sorento Power Steering Issue: What You Need to Know

Background

Two 2024 Kia Sorentos recently experienced a loss of power steering during dealer inspections. Kia has identified that the motor-driven power steering wire harness was misassembled by its supplier, leading to potential chafing against the steering shaft. As a result, the Korean carmaker’s US dealers will inspect affected vehicles and replace the harness where necessary.

Impact of Power Steering Failure

Modern vehicles heavily rely on power steering for control, especially given their weight. A malfunction in driver assistance systems, like the one observed in the 2024 Kia Sorentos, can make it challenging for drivers to maneuver the vehicle, particularly at lower speeds.

Recall Details

Kia is recalling 95 Sorentos from the 2024 model year due to the power steering failure issue discovered during dealer inspections. The automaker will reach out to owners starting May 7 to bring their vehicles to a dealership for inspection and potential replacement of the motor-driven power steering wire harness.

Cause of the Issue

Kia determined that its supplier, Mobis Alabama, LLC, improperly assembled the wire harness, leading to potential damage and subsequent loss of power steering in the Sorento vehicles.

Preventative Measures

If the motor-driven power steering wire harness fails, drivers may experience increased difficulty in turning the vehicle, especially at low speeds, posing a risk of accidents. While Kia has only reported two incidents so far, it is taking proactive steps to address the issue and prevent any accidents, injuries, or deaths related to the problem.

Owners of affected vehicles are advised to contact their nearest dealership for inspection and necessary repairs to ensure the safety and functionality of their Kia Sorentos.
