AA Calls for VAT Cut as Public Charging Costs Fall
The cost of charging an electric car at the kerbside saw a 12% decrease in June, according to a recent report by the AA.
Peak Rate Reduction
The average peak rate for using a slow charge point dropped from 67p per kWh in May to 59p per kWh in June. This type of charger is typically found in residential areas.
Comparing Costs
Despite the decrease in charging costs, running an electric car can still be more expensive than a petrol equivalent. For example, charging a Vauxhall Corsa Electric using slow chargers at peak times costs 13.33p per mile, while a petrol Corsa costs 12.85p per mile.
Off-Peak Advantage
Using slow and ultra-rapid chargers during off-peak times results in lower running costs compared to petrol cars, at 9.49p per mile and 11.53 per mile respectively.
Call for Action
The AA is urging the government to implement “easy wins” to further reduce charging costs, such as cutting VAT and providing more support for local governments to address charger shortages in certain areas.
