Adrian Newey Aston Martin F1

Aston Martin has made a significant addition to its Formula 1 team by appointing Adrian Newey, the most successful design engineer in the sport, as its managing technical partner. Newey, who has achieved over 200 grand prix wins, 13 drivers’ championships, and 12 constructors’ championships across three F1 teams, will begin his role at the Silverstone-based team on March 2, 2025.

Leaving Red Bull Racing

Adrian Newey surprised many by leaving Red Bull Racing, where he had been on semi-gardening leave since May 2024. In an exclusive interview with Autocar’s My Week In Cars Podcast, Newey revealed that there were multiple reasons behind his decision to depart from the team. Despite initially expecting to spend the rest of his career at Red Bull, Newey admitted that he had started to feel a loss of motivation in Formula 1.

Joining Aston Martin

Aston Martin’s part-owner and executive chairman, Lawrence Stroll, played a crucial role in attracting Newey to the team. Describing Stroll as “the best in the world at what he does,” Newey praised his passion and commitment to the team’s success. In addition to a rumored astronomical salary, Newey will also receive a shareholding in the team, which he believes will change his outlook.

Future Challenges

While Aston Martin finished fifth in the constructors’ championship last year, Newey acknowledged that the team still has room for improvement. His primary focus will be on developing the 2026 car, taking into account the new and highly changed chassis regulations for that season. Despite his interest in road cars, Newey clarified that his role will not involve working with Aston Martin’s road car division, as F1 will be his sole focus for the foreseeable future.
