Alfa Romeo’s Electric SUV to Challenge BMW iX | Giga Gears

Alfa Romeo Announces Plans for Electric SUV in 2027

Alfa Romeo has recently announced its plans to launch a large electric SUV in 2027. This new flagship SUV will be positioned in the E-segment and will compete against popular electric SUVs such as the BMW iX, Lotus Eletre, the next-generation Porsche Cayenne, and a new model from Alpine.

According to Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato, this new electric SUV will follow a replacement for the Stelvio SUV in the class below. Imparato also revealed that the upcoming SUV will be “higher” than Alfa’s previous E-segment offering, the 166 saloon, which was produced from 1998 to 2007. However, it will be lower than traditional SUVs in order to enhance aerodynamic efficiency and provide engaging dynamics.

The new Alfa Romeo electric SUV will be based on the same EV-only STLA Large platform as the next Stelvio and the Giulia saloon’s replacement. This platform has been specifically designed to accommodate the cars offered by Stellantis’s premium brands, including Alfa Romeo, DS, Lancia, and Maserati.

One of the key features of this new SUV is its 800V electrical architecture, which enables ultra-rapid charging. With the most powerful public chargers, the SUV can replenish a substantial portion of its long-range (up to 500 miles) in less than 30 minutes. This fast-charging capability will significantly reduce charging time and enhance convenience for owners.

While the European market is important for Alfa Romeo, the primary focus for this flagship SUV will be the US and China. Imparato explained that the volumes in Western Europe are relatively small, and the company wants to ensure that the SUV’s launch aligns with the evolving market demands.

The STLA Large platform offers flexibility in terms of powertrain options. Alfa Romeo has the option to fit up to three motors to its new SUV, which opens the possibility for a high-performance Quadrifoglio version with over 1000bhp. This layout has already been associated with the forthcoming electric Giulia.

In addition to its impressive performance, the Alfa Romeo electric SUV will also feature Tesla-rivalling levels of digital functionality. Thanks to Stellantis’s new STLA Brain electronic architecture, the SUV will offer hands-free driving capabilities and an intuitive infotainment interface. However, Alfa Romeo remains committed to prioritizing the handling and driving experience over flashy tech features.

Despite the switch to an EV-specific platform, Alfa Romeo intends to retain the traditional rear-wheel-drive visual focus of its larger cars. Design chief Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos emphasized the importance of emphasizing the rear muscles to give the SUV a distinctive rear-wheel-drive appearance.

In conclusion, Alfa Romeo’s announcement of a new electric SUV for 2027 is an exciting development for fans of the brand. With its engaging dynamics, ultra-rapid charging capability, and Tesla-rivalling digital functionality, this flagship SUV is set to make a significant impact in the electric SUV market. Alfa Romeo’s commitment to delivering a driver’s car with a rear-wheel-drive focus ensures that enthusiasts can look forward to an exhilarating driving experience.
