Audi A3 to Get Electric Successor on MEB Platform by 2027

Audi has confirmed its plans to replace the Audi A3 with an electric version by 2027. The new electric entry-level car will be similar in size to the A3 but has not yet been confirmed to use its name. Audi will continue to use the VW Group’s MEB platform for its entry-level EVs, including the electric replacement for the A3.

Currently, the only Audi model based on the MEB platform is the Audi Q4 E-tron crossover. However, Audi’s technical development boss Oliver Hoffman revealed that the company will use MEB for “A-segment” cars, which refers to cars the size of the A3 hatchback and Q2 crossover. The electric A3 equivalent is expected to use the updated version of MEB, called MEB-EVO, which will support charging speeds of between 175kW and 200kW.

Audi’s strategy for extending its electric lineup downwards while remaining a premium brand involves launching a completely new generation of ICE (internal combustion engine) and PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) cars until 2026. Starting in 2026, Audi will only launch battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) worldwide, including in all core segments from A-segment to D-segment.

Hoffman also mentioned that Audi will have ICE and PHEV cars in parallel with its BEV lineup during this decade of transformation. This suggests that the combustion-fueled A3 could remain on sale alongside its electric equivalent. The A3 replacement has been conceived as a five-door hatchback and four-door saloon, with incremental increases in dimensions and altered proportions.

Using the rear-driven MEB platform means that standard versions of the A3 replacement will abandon front-wheel drive for the first time since the model’s introduction in 1996. The new electric A3 is expected to spawn more potent variants, including the S3 and RS3, which may feature a second motor on the front axle for four-wheel drive.

As Audi transitions to an EV-only brand, an electric RS3 will be the entry point into the electrified performance lineup. Audi Sport’s electrified portfolio began with range-topping variants of the Audi E-tron SUV and Audi E-tron GT saloon. The electric RS3 is expected to outpace the current five-cylinder petrol car in terms of straight-line performance, with a sub-3.8-second 0-62mph time. It is also likely to feature torque-vectoring functionality for dynamic agility.

In conclusion, Audi’s plans to replace the Audi A3 with an electric version by 2027 demonstrate its commitment to expanding its EV lineup. By utilizing the MEB platform and introducing the MEB-EVO architecture, Audi aims to offer an entry-level electric car that retains the premium qualities associated with the brand. The introduction of an electric RS3 further showcases Audi’s dedication to electrifying its performance lineup. With nearly 20 new cars set to launch by 2025, Audi is entering a busy period of product launches and embracing the decade of transformation towards electric mobility.
