Automakers’ Money-Driven Protests Against AM Radio | Giga Gears

The Real Motive Behind Automakers’ Opposition to AM Radio

automakers protests against am radio have always been about money

Introduction

The future of AM radio seems uncertain as automakers continue to push for its removal from vehicles. While they initially argued that AM radio could interfere with electronic equipment and electric vehicle (EV) features, a recent report reveals that their true motive is financial gain.

The Drive’s Report

A joint document released by the Center for Automotive Research and the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, as reported by The Drive, highlights the automakers’ opposition to keeping AM radio in cars. This comes in response to the bipartisan AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act of 2023.

Money Matters

Upon closer examination, it becomes evident that the automakers’ arguments against AM radio ultimately revolve around money. While they made unsubstantiated claims about interference with EV technology, they have also been eliminating AM radio from gas-powered cars. Furthermore, The Drive points out that the overlap between EV owners and AM radio listeners is minimal, as the latter tend to lean towards right-wing media, which has not been particularly supportive of electric vehicles.

Overestimated Expenses

Some critics argue that the auto industry has greatly exaggerated the expenses associated with maintaining AM radio. According to a spokesperson quoted in Automotive News, the actual cost would only be a fraction of what the industry estimates.

The Future of AM Radio

Despite automakers’ opposition, it appears that the fight to keep AM radio is tilting in favor of its supporters. The AM radio legislation has gained overwhelming support in Congress, and even agencies like FEMA have voiced their endorsement.
