The Bentley Flying Spur Goes Electric

The highly anticipated new Bentley Flying Spur has been unveiled, and it comes with a major change under the hood. The iconic W12 engine has been replaced with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, similar to the one found in the Continental GT.

Unmatched Power and Performance

This new powertrain combines a 592bhp 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine with a gearbox-mounted electric motor. Together, they produce a staggering 771bhp and 738lb ft of torque, making it the most powerful four-door saloon ever produced by Bentley. This is a significant increase of 145bhp compared to the discontinued W12 engine.

Efficiency and Range

The Flying Spur’s electric motor replaces cylinder-deactivation technology, allowing the V8 engine to switch off at low loads. The electric motor can power the car solely in electric mode at speeds up to 87mph or three-quarters throttle. With a 25.9kWh battery, the Flying Spur has a claimed maximum electric range of 47 miles. The car can be recharged at speeds of up to 11kW using an AC charging cable or by the engine in Charge mode. Bentley claims a total range of 515 miles when combining the battery and petrol tank. While the exact fuel economy figures have not been disclosed, Bentley states that this is their most efficient model to date.

Enhanced Driving Experience

Bentley has made significant improvements to the Flying Spur’s underpinnings, resulting in a more dynamic driving experience. Despite the weight penalty of 209kg compared to the W12 model, the new powertrain shifts the car’s weight distribution. Now, 52% of the car’s mass is positioned over the rear axle, improving traction. The chassis has also been revised, with new twin-valve dampers for improved comfort and body control. The electronic stability control software has been updated to ensure stability in various driving scenarios.

Subtle Exterior Changes

Visually, the facelifted Flying Spur remains similar to the outgoing model. However, there are some minor exterior changes, including squared lower air dams and a redesigned ADAS sensor. The Speed models receive unique grille, front bumper, and rear splitter designs.

Luxurious Interior Features

The new Flying Spur offers the optional Wellness Seating Specification, which actively adjusts an occupant’s posture for maximum comfort. This feature is now available for all four seats, whereas it was previously reserved for the driver.

Deliveries of the new Bentley Flying Spur will begin by the end of this year, with prices starting at approximately £220,000.
