BMW i3-Based Electric Roadster Revives Triumph TR2

Makkina Celebrates 25th Anniversary with Stunning Triumph TR25

Makkina, a lesser-known car design company, has been creating vehicles for industry giants since 1998. To mark its 25th anniversary, Makkina decided to create a one-of-a-kind show car that would not only showcase its design prowess but also pay homage to the English automaker Triumph’s 100th anniversary. The result is the breathtaking Triumph TR25.

The TR25 is a celebration of the Triumph TR2, which set a land speed record in Jabbeke, Belgium in 1953. This pre-production model achieved a remarkable speed of 124.889 mph (200.989 km/h), a record for sub-2.0-liter cars that turns 70 this year. It is truly a historic project.

Unlike the original TR2, the new TR25 boasts an all-electric powertrain. Built on the platform of a BMW i3S, the TR25 benefits from a low center of gravity and nearly 50-50 weight distribution, resulting in exceptional handling dynamics.

Michael Ani, the director of Makkina, explains, “Our aim was to update the true character of the original record-breaking ‘Jabbeke’ TR2 with our design, through both interior and exterior design. Using the BMW i3S platform allows us to create a blend of old and new with the TR2-inspired body shape and the versatile and adaptable powertrain, creating a seamless, fully electric experience.”

While not identical to the TR2, the TR25 clearly draws inspiration from its predecessor. From the reinterpreted headlights that celebrate Makkina’s 25th anniversary to the round front end and single-seat setup, the TR25 pays homage to the record-breaker that came before it.

Although the TR25 features only one permanent seat, drivers can bring along a passenger by removing the tonneau cover and raising the jumper seat on the left side of the vehicle. The instrument cluster displays only speed and state of charge, emphasizing the driver-oriented nature of the car. Additionally, a second self-leveling screen in the center of the steering wheel allows the driver to select their preferred driving mode.

In terms of safety, the TR25 includes a buttress behind the driver’s head that conceals a rearview camera, providing protection in the event of a rollover. Interestingly, the TR25 does not require any mirrors.

Under the hood, the TR25 retains much of the BMW i3S’s powertrain. It still features 42.2 kWh of batteries, although they have been reconfigured, and its motor still produces 181 hp (135 kW/184 PS). However, thanks to its new carbon fiber body, the TR25 sheds over 450 lbs (205 kg) in weight. As a result, it can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 5.2 seconds, which is 1.7 seconds faster than the i3S. While its top speed of 115 mph (185 km/h) may be slower than the Jabbeke TR2, it undoubtedly reaches that speed much quicker than its 70-year-old counterpart.

The Triumph TR25 is more than just a concept car; it serves as a design showcase for Makkina. While the company has not disclosed the cost of creating the TR25 or any plans to produce more units, it is undoubtedly an effective tool for drawing attention to Makkina’s 25 years of design excellence.

In conclusion, Makkina’s Triumph TR25 is a stunning tribute to both the company’s 25th anniversary and Triumph’s 100th anniversary. With its blend of old and new, this all-electric show car showcases Makkina’s ability to create a seamless and exhilarating driving experience. While it may not be widely known, Makkina’s design expertise is certainly deserving of recognition.
