Emulating Gear Shifts and Sounds for a More Engaging Driving Experience

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has garnered praise for being the most driver-focused EV available. BMW’s M division has taken note and plans to introduce emulated gear shifts and artificial sounds to enhance the driving experience of its EVs.

When developing the Ioniq 5 N, Hyundai went beyond expectations by creating systems that allow drivers to shift through synthetic gears of an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Future BMW EVs to Offer Enhanced Driving Experience

BMW M’s CEO, Frank van Meel, commended Hyundai’s innovative approach and confirmed that BMW is already working on simulated gear shifts for its electric vehicles. This technology aims to provide drivers with vital feedback without distracting them from the road.

Van Meel emphasized the importance of connecting with the driver’s senses in electric vehicles, which lack traditional engine sounds and gear shifts. By introducing fake sounds and simulated gear shifts, BMW hopes to create a more engaging driving experience for its customers.

Upcoming High-Performance EV from BMW M

The first high-performance electric vehicle from BMW’s M division will be based on the Neue Klasse platform. Expected to launch in 2026 or 2027, this sedan will feature a quad-motor powertrain capable of producing over 1,341 horsepower.
