BMW Leads European Electric Car Market with 14,869 Sales
In a significant milestone, BMW has overtaken Tesla as the top-selling electric car brand in Europe. According to recent data, BMW delivered 14,869 new electric vehicles (EVs) in Europe last month, surpassing Tesla by 308 units.
Tesla Experiences Decline in European Market
While BMW’s sales soared, Tesla faced a decline in the European market. Registrations of Tesla’s popular Model Y SUV dropped by 16% to 9,544, and sales of the Model 3 saloon fell by 17% to 4,694.
Factors Contributing to the Decline in EV Sales
The overall European EV market experienced a 6% decrease in sales compared to the previous year. Market analysts attribute this decline to the absence of government incentives and consumer concerns regarding resale values.
Top-Selling EVs in Europe
The best-selling electric vehicle in Europe last month was the Model Y, followed by the Volvo EX30 with 6,573 sales and the Volkswagen ID 4 with 5,295 sales.
European Car Market Overview
The European car market as a whole grew by 2% compared to July 2023, reaching a total of 1.03 million cars. Notably, 54% of these cars were SUVs, indicating a growing preference for this vehicle segment among consumers.
Shift Towards SUVs
Jato analyst Felipe Munoz explains that the availability of more affordable models and the comfort and desirability of SUVs have driven consumers to switch from traditional car segments to SUVs.
Best-Selling Models in Europe
The Dacia Sandero claimed the top spot as Europe’s best-selling model with 22,398 sales, followed by the Volkswagen T-Roc with 19,254 sales and the Toyota Yaris Cross with 17,314 sales.
On the other hand, the Ford Puma, which was the UK’s best-seller in 2023, experienced a decline in Europe, falling to 20th place as registrations dropped by 25% to 10,342.
Overall, BMW’s achievement in surpassing Tesla in the European electric car market highlights the brand’s growing popularity and the increasing competition in the EV industry.
