BMW Dominates Premium Car Sales in H1 2024

BMW Leads the Pack in Premium Car Sales

  • In the first half of 2024, BMW sold 1,096,486 units, outperforming Mercedes (960,000 units) and Audi (833,000 units).
  • BMW’s electric vehicle sales surged by 34 percent compared to the previous year.
  • Mercedes lagged behind BMW in BEV sales, moving nearly half the number of electric vehicles.

BMW announced a total of 1,096,486 vehicle sales in the first half of 2024, securing its position as the top-selling premium automaker despite a slight 1.3 percent decline in sales in the second quarter.

The BMW brand experienced a 2.3 percent increase in sales in H1 2024 compared to the same period last year, with a remarkable 34 percent growth in electric vehicle sales, reaching close to 180,000 units. In contrast, Mercedes saw a drop of 8 percent in first-half sales to 960,000 units, with BEV sales declining by 17 percent to 93,400 units – nearly half of BMW’s figures.

Electric Bright Spot Can’t Save Sinking Audi US Sales

Audi experienced an 8 percent decrease in H1 2024 sales to 833,000 units, despite a 1.3 percent rise in BEV sales. The company is contemplating shutting down its Brussels plant due to low demand for the Audi Q8 e-tron. The flagship fully electric SUV may face an early end after a significant update in 2022.

Porsche, part of the VW Group like Audi, sold 155,945 vehicles in the first half of 2024, marking a 7 percent decline from the previous year. Porsche’s numbers were impacted by a substantial 33 percent drop in China and a 51 percent decrease in global Taycan deliveries. Reuters reports that Mercedes, Audi, and Porsche are relying on upcoming model launches to boost sales and make up for lost ground.

BMW’s Strong Performers and Market Insights

BMW’s flagship 7-Series saw a notable 22 percent growth in the first half of 2024. Other successful models include the X1, 3-Series, and high-performance offerings from the BMW M division with a total of 99,517 sales.

Jochen Goller, BMW AG Board of Management member responsible for Customer, Brands, Sales, commented on the double-digit growth of fully electric vehicles and upper premium segment models despite market challenges. Goller attributed this success to BMW’s attractive product portfolio.

The Bavarian automaker faced criticism for some polarizing designs but managed to maintain customer interest. Sales figures for each BMW Group brand, including Mini and Rolls-Royce, are detailed below. Additionally, regional sales performance for BMW and Mini worldwide is presented.
