BMW unveils futuristic electric sports car: Giga Gears

BMW Developing Futuristic Electric Sports Car Prototype

New Prototype Spotted Testing Near BMW’s R&D Centre in Bavaria

BMW is currently working on a cutting-edge two-seat coupé that could potentially succeed the iconic i8 as the flagship model in its upcoming Neue Klasse electric car lineup. A new prototype of this futuristic vehicle has been recently spotted undergoing testing near the company’s research and development base in Bavaria.

Design Cues from Neue Klasse and Neue Klasse X Concepts

Despite being heavily camouflaged, the prototype showcases several design elements inspired by BMW’s Neue Klasse and Neue Klasse X concepts, including a reinterpreted kidney grille. One of the most notable features of this prototype is the presence of four in-wheel motors, indicating a departure from BMW’s traditional EV motor placement.

Investment in Innovative Motor Specialist

Last year, BMW made a significant investment of $16.1 million into Deepdrive, a motor specialist located near its R&D base in Garching, near Munich. Deepdrive’s drive units, including in-wheel motors, are known for their cost- and energy-efficiency, as well as high torque density.

Future Production Plans

Deepdrive aims to commence small-scale production of its dual-rotor motors by 2026, with larger-scale production expected to follow in 2028. The company predicts that in-wheel motors will account for 5-10% of the total motor market by 2030.

Potential Limited Production

Given the innovative technology and limited production capacity of in-wheel motors, BMW’s new coupé may be a strictly limited offering. It could potentially serve as the flagship model among the upcoming Neue Klasse lineup, which includes models like the iX3 and electric 3 Series set to launch next year.

BMW’s Pursuit of High-Performance Sports Cars

While BMW has not officially confirmed details about this new electric coupé, there seems to be a strong interest within the company to develop a high-performance flagship sports car. Previous projects like the i16 hybrid supercar demonstrate BMW’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive innovation.
