BMW’s Electric Lineup to Adopt Simpler Naming System

BMW, known for its “i” branding in its electric lineup, is considering a new naming system to avoid confusion with its SUV models. Currently, the alphanumeric names of the X3 and X5 include drive wheel information, and adding another letter could lead to a messy naming convention. To address this issue, BMW has filed a trademark application for “iM3” with the German patent and trademark office, indicating a potential shift towards a more straightforward naming approach for its electric models.

Potential First Electric M Car: The BMW M3

According to a report by CarBuzz, the trademark application suggests that the first electric M car from BMW could be named the M3. While there are already “M-ish” versions of other electric BMW models available, this hints at a dedicated electric M3. The upcoming performance EV is expected to feature a four-motor electric drivetrain capable of delivering up to 700 horsepower. There are also rumors of a wagon variant for other markets, and BMW has expressed its commitment to introducing more electrified performance vehicles in the future.

The Future of BMW’s Naming Structure

As BMW’s i-lineup continues to expand, it remains uncertain how the automaker will handle naming conventions once its gas vehicles are phased out. The “i” designation may no longer be necessary, and it is hoped that BMW’s transition to the “Neue Klasse” design language in the coming years will bring a sensible and cohesive naming structure.
