Boat Not ICEing EV Charge Point: Debunking the Myth

Electric Boat Parks in EV Charging Bay: A Surprising Sight

Electric Boat in EV Charging Bay

We’ve all seen images of combustion-powered trucks trolling EV drivers by parking in dedicated charging bays. But surely ICEing a charge point with a boat is taking things too far.

A Boat in an EV Bay?

That must have been the thought going through the head of one Redditor when he spotted this boat and trailer hogging an EV bay. But a closer look revealed it was genuinely hooked up to the mains, while stickers on the side that read “100% Electric” provided extra assurance to any irate EV drivers.

The Super Nautique GS22E

The boat causing a stir is the Super Nautique GS22E, a watersports boat designed for towing waterskiers and wakeboarders. It’s the result of a collaboration between Nautique and its sister company Ingenity, two brands under the umbrella of Florida-based Correct Craft. The GS22E features a 295 hp (299 PS / 220 kW) electric powertrain and a 120 kWh battery that promises 2-3 hours of on-water fun.

Charging Options

The battery can be charged in various ways. It takes 10 hours using a 240 V AC supply, four hours using a 25 kW DC supply, or just 1.5 hours when juiced with 80 kW. Ingenity installed an electric boat charger on Lake Tahoe in 2020 to coincide with the delivery of the first customer examples of the GS22E, and there are likely many more chargers like it dotted around the country.

Unconventional Parking Choice

The owner of the boat who parked it in the EV charging bay explained that the boats are intended to be charged dockside. However, he was on a demo tour at the time and found the EV bay designed for cars to be the best option available. While unconventional, it seems this choice was made out of necessity.

Pricey Watersports Fun

Nautique also produces similar-looking models designed for watersports use but powered by GM-derived V8 marine engines. These models range in price from $106,541 for the entry-level Ski Nautique 200 to $395,245 for the G25 Paragon. The electric GS22E falls towards the top end of that scale, with a price tag of $312,952. While that kind of money could buy you a smart new supercar, it’s worth noting that a Ferrari 296 can’t accommodate 10 friends or tow an eleventh behind it.
