Smart Unveils #5 Electric SUV: The Largest and Most Powerful Model Yet

Smart, the renowned car manufacturer, has recently introduced its biggest model to date, the #5 electric SUV. This new offering from Smart aims to attract buyers of large SUVs with its off-road capabilities. The vehicle was unveiled in Australia, a market where Smart is eager to expand its presence.

The #5 electric SUV is equipped with a 100kWh battery, providing an impressive range of 348 miles. Additionally, thanks to its 800V electrical architecture, the vehicle can charge from 10% to 80% in just 15 minutes. In Europe, a smaller battery version will be introduced after the initial launch next summer.

Built on the Geely SEA2 platform, which is also used for the smaller #1 and #3 crossovers, the #5 measures 4705mm in length, 1920mm in width, and 1705mm in height. Although it shares a similar size with the new Peugeot 5008, it is not a seven-seater.

While retaining Smart’s modern design cues, such as concealed door handles and rounded edges, the #5 stands out from the rest of the lineup with its boxier and more rugged appearance. The angular headlights and singular light bar have been replaced with a more adventurous look.

Inside the #5, the dashboard is dominated by dual 13-inch OLED infotainment touchscreens. These screens are part of an evolved version of Smart’s UX system and feature an animal avatar, a lion. The driver also benefits from a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster, larger than what is found in the sibling models.

One unique feature of the #5 is that all of its seats are designed to function as makeshift beds, aligning with its outdoor adventure focus. While power figures have not been released yet, information from the Chinese government suggests that the top-of-the-line model could reach 637bhp with a dual-motor configuration, surpassing the smaller #1 and #3 crossovers as well as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Kia EV6 GT electric sports SUVs.

The #5 will be available in two versions: Premium and Summit Edition. The Summit Edition includes additional features such as a roof-mounted light bar, an electric trailer hitch, underbody protection, side steps, and a roof box.

The expected starting price for the #5 in the UK is around £35,000. However, pricing for certain markets, including the UK, may be subject to review due to potential EU import tariffs on Chinese-made EVs.

In conclusion, the Smart #5 electric SUV represents a significant leap for the brand, offering a larger size, impressive power, and off-road capabilities. With its unique features and competitive pricing, it is set to make a strong impact in the SUV market.
