BYD targets European market with luxury MPV to rival Lexus LM

BYD to Launch New Xia MPV in China and Europe

BYD, the Chinese automaker, has announced its plans to introduce the Xia MPV in European markets as part of its expanding range of global export models. The Xia MPV, unveiled at the 2024 Chengdu motor show, is designed to compete with popular models like the Volkswagen Multivan and Mercedes-Benz V-Class.

Spacious and Versatile

The Xia MPV offers seating for up to eight passengers and can be configured in various layouts, including seven-, six-, and four-seat options. With dimensions of 5145mm in length, 1970mm in width, and 1805mm in height, the Xia is slightly smaller than the long-wheelbase version of the Multivan.

Pricing and Platform

The Xia MPV is expected to be priced between ¥300,000 and ¥400,000 in China. It is built on a newly developed platform specifically designed to accommodate plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) drivetrains. This model is the first of three new PHEVs that BYD plans to export to Europe next year.

BYD’s Commitment to PHEVs

BYD President Stella Li has emphasized the importance of PHEVs in the brand’s European growth strategy, particularly in light of declining electric vehicle (EV) demand and EV import tariffs. The Xia MPV is equipped with BYD’s fifth-generation DM (Dual Mode) PHEV system, which offers impressive performance and efficiency.

Impressive Performance and Efficiency

The Xia MPV is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine generating 99bhp and 93lb ft of torque, combined with an electric motor producing 215bhp and 192lb ft. It is equipped with a 10.1kWh or 15.9kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) BYD Blade battery, providing electric-only driving capability. The fifth-generation DM drivetrain boasts the highest engine thermal efficiency of any PHEV system in a production car, achieving 46.06%. This results in an average fuel consumption of 97.4mpg and a claimed combined range of up to 1305 miles under the official Chinese test procedure.

Expanding BYD’s Global Lineup

The Xia MPV marks BYD’s first attempt at a global model of this kind. Currently, BYD offers six models in selected European markets, including the Atto 3 crossover, Dolphin supermini, Han saloon, Seal saloon, Seal U crossover, and Tang seven-seat SUV.

With the launch of the Xia MPV, BYD aims to strengthen its position in the European market and cater to the growing demand for versatile and eco-friendly vehicles. The Xia MPV is set to launch in China later this year, with its European arrival confirmed for 2025.
