BYD to Introduce Fangchengbao Hybrid 4x4s in the UK to Rival Land Rover Defender

BYD is set to launch its new range of Fangchengbao off-roaders in the UK, expanding its market coverage and powertrain options. Fangchengbao, a sub-brand of BYD, was unveiled at the Chengdu motor show with three electrified 4x4s named Bao 3, Bao 5, and Bao 8. The company’s president, Stella Li, confirmed that these rugged off-roaders will be exported to the UK and anticipates a strong reception in the market.

The mid-sized Bao 5, comparable in size to the Land Rover Defender 110, is the brand’s first production vehicle and is likely to make its way to UK dealerships. It boasts premium quality materials, advanced technology, and impressive off-road capabilities with a ground clearance of 220mm and approach and departure angles of 35deg and 32deg respectively. Powered by a range-extender system combining a 1.5-liter turbo engine with electric motors on each axle, the Bao 5 delivers up to 677bhp and 561lb ft of torque.

On the other hand, the larger Bao 8, similar in size to the Defender 130, features a more potent 2.0-liter engine and a combined output exceeding 900bhp from its two EV motors. Equipped with a Disus-P hydraulic suspension system, the Bao 8 offers seating for six or seven passengers in China and can perform unique maneuvers like ‘dancing’ while stationary.

Additionally, BYD plans to introduce three new plug-in hybrids in Europe in 2025, alongside launching three new EVs next year. These initiatives align with BYD’s commitment to offering a diverse range of electrified vehicles to cater to different markets. Stay tuned for the arrival of Fangchengbao’s hybrid 4x4s in the UK as they aim to rival the iconic Land Rover Defender.
