Edison Motors Introduces Electric Conversions for Classic Pickup Trucks

Electric Conversion for Classic Pickup Trucks

Edison Motors, a Canadian company, has announced its plans to offer electric conversions for classic pickup trucks. The aim is to extend the lifespan of these gas-guzzling vehicles by transforming them into eco-friendly electric models.

Electric Conversion Kits for Classic Pickup Trucks

Although Edison Motors may not be a familiar name, the company has recently developed an electric conversion kit for Class 8 trucks. This kit replaces the original powertrain with a diesel generator, a large battery pack, and an electric motor. Building on this success, the company will soon start selling similar conversion packages for various pickup truck models, including square body Chevys and classic Ford F-Series trucks.

The Installation Process

During the conversion process, Edison Motors removes the original axles and replaces them with one or two electric axles, depending on the customer’s preference. Trucks equipped with a single e-axle will have a power output of 350 horsepower, while those with two electric motors can produce up to 500 horsepower. The original driveline and transmission are replaced with a Caterpillar diesel engine that serves as a generator. Additionally, a lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack with either a 60 kWh or 90 kWh capacity is installed, along with an inverter control unit.

Powerful Performance and Features

Edison Motors’ electric conversion system operates on a 600-volt electrical architecture. Control modules are conveniently housed within a toolkit-inspired storage unit in the truck bed. The company offers both single-rear-wheel and dually options for customers. These retrofit models are described as “torque monsters” with an impressive 8,000 lb-ft (10,846 Nm) of torque and a top speed of approximately 140 mph (225 km/h).

Compatibility and Pricing

While the electric conversion can theoretically be applied to new trucks, Edison Motors acknowledges that the process would be more challenging due to the advanced software and technologies found in newer models. Certified Edison dealers will handle the installation and servicing of the conversion kits. As for pricing, the cost will vary depending on the specific truck and desired components. However, Edison estimates that the conversion will be approximately half or one-third the price of purchasing a new pickup truck.

With Edison Motors’ electric conversion kits, classic pickup truck owners can now enjoy the benefits of electric mobility while preserving the nostalgic charm of their beloved vehicles.
