CATL Achieves Significant Reduction in EV Battery Charging Time During Cold Weather

CATL, the world’s largest EV battery manufacturer, has announced a major breakthrough in improving the charging efficiency of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), particularly in extremely cold conditions. The company claims to have developed a new electrolyte that can deliver a 50% increase in efficiency at temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit). Even under normal temperatures, charging efficiency has improved by 43%.

During a forum in Shanghai, China, CATL’s chief scientist Wu Kai revealed that the company’s new electrolyte has the potential to revolutionize the EV industry. Wu did not provide specific details about how the electrolyte was developed, but he stated that CATL will be able to mass-produce an EV battery that can be recharged in just 10 minutes while offering a driving range of 400 km (248 miles). The company’s next goal is to develop an EV battery with a range of 400 km that can be recharged in just 5 to 7 minutes.

However, Wu believes that no one in the industry is currently capable of mass-producing solid-state batteries.

In April, CATL announced that it had the technology to build battery cells with an energy density of up to 500 Wh/kg, surpassing the energy density of Tesla’s current 4680 cells, which have an energy density of 296 Wh/kg.
