Introduction

Smart is building anticipation for the launch of their biggest car yet, the #5, by releasing teaser sketches of the compact SUV. However, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has already revealed undisguised images of the SUV, well ahead of its official debut on August 28.

Smart’s Answer to the Tesla Model Y

The Smart #5 is an important model for the brand as it aims to compete with the Tesla Model Y, which was the world’s most popular car in 2023. This two-row, all-electric SUV has similar proportions to a Mercedes GLB and rides on a 114.2-inch wheelbase, making it as big as a BMW X3 or Model Y.

Design and Features

Smart’s teaser campaign showcases sketches of the #5 that resemble the Concept #5 unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show. The SUV features LED roof lights, pannier boxes on the C-pillar, and large wheels pushed to the edges of the fenders. Although the reality may not be as exciting as the sketches, the #5 still looks impressive.

Powertrain Options

Smart has not provided detailed information about the powertrain options for the #5 in their latest release. However, according to MIIT data, the SUV will offer four motor options. The first two options feature a single rear-mounted electric motor with 335 hp or 358 hp, powered by an LFP battery. The remaining two options use NMC batteries and combine a front-mounted electric motor with a rear unit, offering 221 hp and 358 hp or 416 hp respectively. The top-spec #5 will have up to 637 hp and a 341-mile range, with 800-volt technology allowing for a 100 kWh battery to recharge from 10-80% in just 15 minutes.

Conclusion

The Smart #5 is set to make its debut in Brisbane, Australia on August 28. While the official range and performance figures are yet to be revealed, the undisguised images and teaser sketches already give us a good idea of what to expect from Smart’s largest SUV.
