Chrysler’s New CEO: What’s Your Plan?

As the new CEO of Chrysler, I recognize that resting on our laurels is not an option in today’s automotive climate. It’s clear that our current position in the market is between a rock and a hard place, with only two main models, the 300 and the Pacifica. The 300 was a bombshell when it first arrived back in 2003, but it has languished a bit without major updates since 2013. On the other hand, the Pacifica is still a compelling minivan, but it hasn’t seen a major refresh since 2017.

One potential path forward for Chrysler is to lean into the family-hauler identity with a splash of fuel economy focus and luxury. This approach has worked well for Lexus, and we could explore ways to make our minivans even more luxurious and fuel-efficient. We could also consider expanding our lineup of minivans, perhaps by making the Voyager available to the general public as a more upscale option.

However, we also need to consider whether a different direction altogether might be necessary to save Chrysler and return it to its once lofty position. As CEO, I would explore a variety of options, including:

1. Emphasizing electric vehicles: With the Airflow concept now cancelled in favor of a new STLA-based EV that will debut in 2024, we could double down on our commitment to electric vehicles. We could explore ways to make our EVs more affordable and accessible to a wider range of consumers, while also emphasizing their luxury features and performance capabilities.

2. Partnering with other automakers: Another option would be to explore partnerships with other automakers to help us develop new models and technologies more quickly and efficiently. This could include joint ventures with companies like Toyota or Honda, or even mergers with other automakers that share our vision for the future of the industry.

3. Investing in autonomous driving technology: As self-driving cars become more common, we could invest heavily in autonomous driving technology to help us stay ahead of the curve. This could include developing our own autonomous driving systems or partnering with companies like Waymo or Cruise to integrate their technology into our vehicles.

4. Focusing on sustainability: Finally, we could focus on making our vehicles more sustainable and environmentally friendly. This could include developing new hybrid or electric models, as well as exploring ways to reduce the environmental impact of our manufacturing processes and supply chains.

Ultimately, the path forward for Chrysler will depend on a variety of factors, including market trends, consumer preferences, and technological advancements. As CEO, I would work closely with our team to explore all of these options and more, in order to find the best way to save Chrysler and return it to its once lofty position in the automotive industry.
