Introduction

We recently had the opportunity to test both the petrol and electric versions of the Citroen C4X. Our goal was to determine if this electric fastback saloon could compete with the growing SUV market. In this article, we will provide an overview of our experience with both versions of the C4X.

Month 6: Final Report

After spending time with both the electric and petrol versions of the Citroen C4X, it’s time to decide which one gets our vote. Overall, our experience with both cars was enjoyable, but unfortunately, it ended on a sour note. While driving on the M4, all of the C4X’s interior screens suddenly switched off, leaving us without vital driving information. After contacting the RAC and Citroen, it was determined to be a software glitch that was resolved with a system reset. However, this issue did tarnish our overall experience with the C4X.

Despite this setback, there were many things we liked about both versions of the C4X. The comfort level was exceptional, with plush seats and excellent ride comfort. The interior space was ample, and the rear cabin received positive feedback from passengers. The boot space was also generous, although the design of the boot hinges could be improved to maximize practicality.

However, there were some common gripes across both models. The infotainment system was responsive but confusing to navigate quickly. The digital driver’s display was too small, cutting off some information. We often relied on the head-up display, although it did have a graphical glitch when cruise control was activated.

In terms of price, the petrol version of the C4X is significantly more affordable than the electric version. This price difference may sway some buyers towards the petrol model, especially considering the EV’s unremarkable range. While the electric version may be sufficient for many drivers, it posed challenges for us, particularly without access to a home charger.

In conclusion, the Citroen C4X is an endearing car with either a petrol or electric powertrain. However, the reliability issues we experienced, along with the EV’s limited range, may deter some buyers. Ultimately, the decision between the two versions comes down to personal preference and budget.

Month 5: Practicality and Storage

During our time with the Citroen C4X, we put its practicality to the test. The boot space, with 510 litres, was more than sufficient for most occasions. However, the design of the boot hinges sometimes obstructed loading larger items. The interior also offered plenty of storage compartments, although they were so well concealed that we once lost our keys in them.

Overall, the C4X proved to be a practical companion, especially for long-distance travel. The comfortable seats and excellent ride comfort made it a relaxing car to drive. However, the boot hinges and loading lip could be improved for easier loading and unloading.

Month 4: Petrol Version Performance

After switching to the petrol version of the Citroen C4X, we found that it still offered practicality and comfort. The petrol engine, a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo unit, provided adequate performance for most situations. However, the engine sound was artificial, and the automatic gearbox was slow to react off the line. The petrol version excelled on longer drives, with excellent efficiency and a predicted range of over 400 miles per tank.

Month 3: Electric Version Efficiency

During our time with the electric version of the Citroen C4X, we found it to be a comfortable and efficient car for urban commuting. The comfort levels were outstanding, with plush seats and a well-insulated cabin. The electric powertrain provided ample acceleration and power for city driving. However, the range was a concern, especially on longer trips and in colder temperatures. We found that the range could be significantly affected by using battery-draining systems like air conditioning and radio.

Month 2: Comfort and Technology

The Citroen C4X impressed us with its exceptional comfort levels. The seats were plush and comfortable, and the cabin was well-insulated from road and wind noise. The car’s suspension absorbed bumps and potholes with ease, making it a relaxing car to drive. However, we did encounter some issues with the infotainment system, which was difficult to use on the move. The resolution of the digital screen behind the steering wheel was also poor compared to other cars in the Stellantis lineup.

Month 1: First Impressions

Our initial impressions of the Citroen C4X were positive. The car’s comfort levels were outstanding, with plush seats and a quiet cabin. The electric powertrain provided excellent efficiency for urban commuting, with a predicted range of over 200 miles on a single charge. However, we did encounter some issues with the car’s technology, including a temperamental starter button and a challenging infotainment system.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Citroen C4X offers a comfortable and practical driving experience, whether in its petrol or electric version. However, there were some reliability issues and limitations with the electric version’s range. The decision between the two versions ultimately comes down to personal preference and budget. Despite these drawbacks, the Citroen C4X remains an endearing car with its unique design and focus on comfort.
