New Citroën C5 Aircross to Become Flagship Model with Electric Power
Introduction
Citroën is preparing to launch a new version of its popular C5 Aircross SUV next year, which will serve as the brand’s flagship model and feature electric power for the first time. The French automaker has decided to focus on main-segment models, leading to the discontinuation of the slow-selling C5 X sedan. However, the C5 Aircross will continue into a new generation.
Electric Powertrain
The current C5 Aircross, introduced in the UK in 2018, is available with petrol and hybrid powertrains. The upcoming second-generation model will be built on the multi-powertrain STLA Medium platform, which it shares with the Peugeot e-3008 and Vauxhall Grandland. This platform will enable the C5 Aircross to offer an electric powertrain, fulfilling Citroën’s goal of providing electric options to its customers.
STLA Medium Platform
The STLA Medium platform, designed with a focus on electric power, can also accommodate hybrid cars. It offers a single-motor version with 207bhp and a twin-motor version with 316bhp. The platform supports either a 73kWh or a 98kWh battery, providing the Peugeot e-3008 with a range of 435 miles.
Plug-In Hybrid Option
In addition to the electric powertrain, the new C5 Aircross will also be available with standard and plug-in hybrid powertrains. This makes it the only model in Citroën’s future lineup to feature a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) option. Citroën CEO Thierry Koskas explained that the decision to offer a PHEV variant was based on market demand and the larger size of the C5 Aircross, which allows for a larger battery.
Design and Positioning
The upcoming C5 Aircross is expected to adopt styling cues from the recently launched C3, showcasing Citroën’s new design language. This includes a more boxy and expressive design, as well as the brand’s new logo. The second-generation model will be positioned above the revamped C4, which will also feature styling elements from the C3.
Conclusion
By introducing an electric powertrain and focusing on main-segment models, Citroën aims to strengthen its position in the market. The new C5 Aircross will serve as the brand’s flagship model, offering customers a range of powertrain options to suit their needs.
