Last year, as our family expanded and my trusty 2018 Citroen C3 began to feel more like a wheeled sardine tin than a family car, the search for a larger, more practical mode of transport became inevitable. After months of enduring the indignity of countless test drives, the C5 Aircross emerged as the least offensive option.

It offered space, comfort, and a modicum of style, making it the pragmatic choice for a family man facing the grim reality of expanding waistlines and toy-strewn interiors. A compromise, yes, but a necessary evil until the kid(s) fly the nest.

But when faced with the mundane task of family transportation, even we must succumb to the tyranny of practicality. The Citroen C5 Aircross emerged as a surprising contender, not out of any misplaced Gallic affection, but due to a compelling blend of space, comfort, and a touch of French eccentricity.
Stylish and Practical
Styling is subjective, but the C5 Aircross’s blend of boxy practicality and curvaceous flair has a certain charm. Its split headlights and old-school chevron badge are showing their age, but the rear-end design, with its pill-shaped LEDs, remains fresh. It’s a quirky look, but one that undeniably stands out in a crowd.
A Spacious Cabin
The Citroen C5 Aircross offers a spacious cabin, thanks to its PSA-era EMP2 underpinnings. With 580 liters of cargo space and three individual seats on the rear bench, it provides ample room for both passengers and luggage. The design of the dashboard is simple and clean, with soft-touch materials on important touchpoints.
The King of Comfort
One of the standout features of the C5 Aircross is its comfort. Citroen’s unique suspension system, featuring hydraulic cushions and softer springs, gives it an edge over competitors, offering a ride quality that is nothing short of superb. Despite its soft suspension, it handles well and excels on bumpy gravel roads.
A Reliable Powertrain
The C5 Aircross is powered by a small but turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder PureTech gasoline engine, delivering 128 horsepower and 230 Nm of torque. While it may not be the most powerful engine in its class, it performs well and offers good fuel efficiency. The choice between gasoline and diesel depends on individual preferences and mileage requirements.
The Verdict
After six months of ownership and more than 6,000 km on the road, I couldn’t be happier with my decision to choose the Citroen C5 Aircross as my family car. It offers the perfect balance of space, comfort, and style, making it a standout choice in its segment. While it may not have the same dynamic prowess as sportier SUVs, its plush suspension and relaxed demeanor make it a joy to drive.
