The electric vehicle market is facing challenges as a new survey reveals a significant decline in consumer interest. Only 18% of participants in the study expressed a strong likelihood of buying an EV, marking a 5% decrease from the previous year. Alarmingly, 63% of respondents stated that they were unlikely to consider an EV for their next vehicle purchase.

The survey, conducted by AAA, highlights a growing trend of consumer skepticism towards EVs. The number of undecided individuals dropped from 24% to 19%, indicating a clear stance against electric vehicles.

Reasons for Reluctance

Common reasons cited for consumer hesitation towards EVs include concerns about cost, range anxiety, and inadequate charging infrastructure. AAA’s research also revealed that 30% of respondents faced challenges installing charging stations in their residential areas, particularly impacting apartment residents.

Greg Brannon, AAA’s director of automotive research, emphasized that many potential EV buyers are deterred by practicality, cost, convenience, and ownership experience hurdles. This sentiment has led to a growing preference for hybrid vehicles among consumers.

Shift Towards Hybrids

While EV adoption faces obstacles, hybrids are gaining traction among consumers. 31% of survey participants expressed a willingness to consider purchasing a hybrid vehicle, signaling a shift in consumer preferences.

Automakers are responding to this trend by focusing on hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, recognizing the changing landscape of consumer demand. This shift marks a significant departure from the past perception of hybrids as outdated technology.
