Cruise, the autonomous car division of GM, has made the decision to scrap its high-profile Origin robotaxi project. The project, which gained attention last year when its license was suspended following a collision with a pedestrian, has been abandoned due to regulatory uncertainty.

Cruise’s Origin robotaxi was a purpose-built vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals, featuring front and rear seats that faced each other. GM CEO Mary Barra cited the unique design of the Origin as the main reason for its cancellation.

Cruise will now focus on developing autonomous versions of the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt, set to be released in 2025.

“The Cruise team will also simplify their path to scale by focusing their next autonomous vehicle on the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt, instead of the Origin,” wrote Barra in a letter to shareholders. “This addresses the regulatory uncertainty we faced with the Origin because of its unique design. In addition, per-unit costs will be much lower, which will help Cruise optimize its resources.”

Cruise’s autonomous cabs have faced challenges in the past, including getting stranded in fog and colliding with buses. However, the incident involving a pedestrian in San Francisco led to the revocation of Cruise’s testing rights by California’s DMV. Cruise has since resumed operations in Phoenix, Dallas, and Houston, but with human drivers and without carrying paying passengers. The company aims to regain the trust of regulators and resume driverless operations after conducting further tests.

Former Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt expressed disappointment in GM’s decision to cancel the Origin project, stating that it would have been beneficial for cities. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, suggested that GM’s technology was not on par with competitors like Waymo, and that the cancellation was due to GM’s inability to make it work.
