“Cupra Terramar SUV: Powerful 268bhp and Enhanced Handling | Giga Gears”

Cupra Terramar SUV: A New Performance-Oriented Rival to BMW X1 and VW Tiguan

Introduction

Cupra has unveiled its latest SUV, the Terramar, which is set to be the brand’s final combustion-engined model. Positioned in the highly competitive C-SUV segment, the sub-£40k Terramar is based on the Evo development of the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform. With its performance-oriented features, the Terramar aims to challenge rivals such as the BMW X1, Kia Sportage, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Engine Options

The Terramar will offer five different engine options, all paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The range includes a 148bhp mild-hybrid four-cylinder engine and two performance-focused flagships. The first flagship model is equipped with a turbocharged non-hybrid four-cylinder engine, delivering 262bhp to all four wheels. The second flagship model is a plug-in hybrid with 268bhp, also available in a 201bhp variant. The PHEV version features a 19.7kWh battery, providing an electric-only range of over 70 miles. It can be charged at rates of up to 50kW on DC power and 11kW on AC. The PHEV variant weighs 1.9 tonnes, slightly more than the pure-petrol models weighing 1.6 tonnes.

Enhanced Performance

Cupra has specifically tuned the Terramar to offer greater driver engagement compared to other vehicles based on the MQB Evo architecture, such as the Skoda Kodiaq. The SUV features a reduced ride height of 10mm and modified front suspension geometry for additional camber. The range-topping VZ models also come with a special Cupra drive mode and the option to disable the electronic stability control.

Interior Design and Technology

The Terramar boasts a driver-oriented interior design, providing a comfortable and immersive driving experience. The cabin features a combination of high-quality materials and finishes. Standard features include a 10.25-inch digital instrument display and a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, both running on a new operating system.

Future Plans

Cupra CEO Wayne Griffiths stated, “The Terramar represents the next stage in our growth journey.” This year, Cupra has already introduced the Tavascan, an electric coupé-bodied sibling to the Terramar, and given major facelifts to the Leon and Formentor models. The brand has committed to transitioning to offering only electric vehicles from 2030, making the Terramar likely its final internal combustion engine model. Deliveries of the new SUV are expected to begin early next year.
