Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: Drift Legend Keiichi Tsuchiya Impressed by Hyundai’s First Electric Performance Vehicle

Hyundai has recently unveiled its first fully electric high-performance vehicle, the Ioniq 5 N. To showcase this exciting new creation, the automaker handed the wheel over to drift legend Keiichi Tsuchiya, who had the opportunity to test drive the sporty electric vehicle (EV) at a drift exposition in Australia.

In a new video, Tsuchiya shares his impressions of the Ioniq 5 N, admitting that he had low expectations initially. He explains that there are not many sports-type cars from Korea in Japan yet, which led him to have reservations about the vehicle. Additionally, it was his first time drifting an electric vehicle, and he had concerns about its weight. However, Tsuchiya was pleasantly surprised by the Ioniq 5 N.

“The most surprising was the agility, which is unthinkable for a car weighing 2,200 kg [4,850 lbs],” Tsuchiya said. “While driving, I thought it would weigh roughly 1,800 [3,968 lbs] to 1,900 kg [4,189 lbs], but when I returned to the pit, I was surprised to learn that it actually weighed 2,200 kg.”

The video footage showcases Tsuchiya’s skillful drifting abilities as he maneuvers the Ioniq 5 N around the Australian track. His enjoyment is evident through his smiling eyes visible through his helmet.

“It was so fun that the rear of the car moves quite well,” Tsuchiya expressed. “While driving, I thought, ‘Oh, they’re making playful cars.’ This is my changed impression about Hyundai Motors.”

The Ioniq 5 N is powered by high-output electric motors at the front and rear, delivering an impressive 641 hp (478 kW/650 PS) to all drivers. It boasts a rearward bias, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 162 mph (260 km/h).

To enhance its performance around corners, the Ioniq 5 N is equipped with an N Torque Distribution system featuring a Torque Kick Drift function. This function allows the driver to simulate a clutch kick and induce a drift, adding to the car’s overall fun and driftability. Hyundai has also equipped the vehicle with its most powerful brakes to effectively slow down its 4,850 lb (2,200 kg) mass.

The Ioniq 5 N represents Hyundai’s commitment to delivering high-performance electric vehicles that can compete with traditional sports cars. With its impressive power, agility, and drift capabilities, it is a testament to Hyundai’s dedication to creating exciting and enjoyable electric vehicles.
