Engine Swapped E30 Touring: A Fancy Tickler

The BMW 3- and 5-Series Touring variants are some of the most popular models in the company’s European lineup. However, it was not until the after-hours project of Max Reisbock, a BMW employee in the 1980s, that the practical five-door version of the E30 sedan was created. When Reisbock drove his creation to work, BMW’s higher-ups were so impressed that they decided to put the car into production with minimal changes to his design. Today, the BMW Touring models are highly sought after, and a rare sight in the US.

A Euro-spec 1992 BMW 316i Touring has recently been imported from the Netherlands to the US, and it boasts an impressive upgrade under the hood. The original M20 2.0-liter engine has been replaced with a 2.8-liter straight-six M52 engine, likely from an E36 328i, E39 528i or E38 728i. This engine would have had an output of around 190 hp in its heyday, a significant increase from the original’s 120-ish horses. It also boosts torque from around 121 lb-ft (164 Nm) to a healthy 210 lb-ft (280 Nm).

The car also features some tasty upgrades, including coilover suspension, brakes from an E34 540i, retrofitted air-conditioning, M-Tech II-style bumpers, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The car was originally high-spec, featuring many elements that an E30 enthusiast would appreciate, including a power sunroof, electric windows all-around, an M-Tech I steering wheel, heated sports seats trimmed in leather, and a full button-tastic onboard computer.

Although the actual mileage is unknown, there are some indicators that suggest the car may have been well-cared for. The seats and door cards appear to be covered in their original leather, the interior carpets look spotless in the pictures, and the dog net and tonneau cover are present and correct.

This BMW E30 Touring would make a great addition to any car enthusiast’s collection. However, some may prefer a more original model. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference.
