European Teslas Avoid Autopilot Recall

Why European Teslas Escape Autopilot Recall

Introduction

The recent Tesla recall in the United States, affecting over 2 million electric vehicles (EVs), has raised concerns among Tesla Model 3, Y, S, and X drivers in other parts of the world. However, European authorities have confirmed that the recall will not impact cars sold in Europe.

Over-Air Updates to Prevent Misuse

Tesla announced that it will be issuing over-air updates to prevent drivers from misusing the Autopilot feature. This decision follows an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into Autopilot-related crashes. The NHTSA launched the investigation after receiving numerous reports of Tesla crashes, some of which were fatal.

Differences in Autopilot Systems

The NHTSA ruled that Autopilot’s Autosteer feature in North American cars lacked sufficient measures to keep drivers engaged in the act of driving. This made it susceptible to misuse by drivers who treated it as a more advanced autonomous system. However, European EVs equipped with Autopilot systems operate differently. The Netherlands-based RDW, responsible for granting Tesla type approval in Europe, stated that the NHTSA’s concerns and recall would not affect European EVs. The RDW explained that there are differences between the two continents in terms of allowed features and driver monitoring systems.

Autopilot Features

Every Tesla vehicle comes with a basic Autopilot system that enables acceleration, braking, and steering within the lane. Enhanced Autopilot adds lane-changing assistance. However, both systems require drivers to remain attentive to the road even when activated.
