Europe’s 2024 Toyota C-HR: First PHEV Option and 223HP

Introducing the Second-Generation Toyota C-HR: A Hybrid Crossover with a PHEV Option

Toyota has launched the second-generation C-HR, a hybrid crossover with a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) option, in Europe. The new C-HR boasts a modern design, advanced technology, and a 100% hybrid lineup. The C-HR Prologue, which was unveiled in late 2022, served as the basis for the production model. The new C-HR features a “hammerhead” front-end styling that is also used in the new Prius.

Design and Features

The new C-HR is smoother and less fussy than its predecessor, with a smart flush-door handle in the rear door that is in a conventional position instead of halfway up the C-pillar. The interior is more sophisticated, with dual 12.3-inch screens for posher models and an 8.0-inch console display for the base version. The C-HR comes with a digital key, advanced safety systems, hands-free driving in traffic jams, and a smartphone-operated, fully automatic remote parking function that Toyota claims is unique in its class.

Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain

The most significant technological advancement in the new C-HR is its plug-in powertrain, which is available for the first time on a C-HR. The front-wheel-drive PHEV combines a 2.0-liter petrol engine with an electric motor for a total of 223 hp (220 PS) and 7.3-second zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) capability. Toyota claims that the PHEV has an electric driving range of 41 miles (66 km) and uses geofencing technology to recognize when the C-HR has entered a low-emissions zone and will automatically switch to EV mode if there is sufficient charge.

Other Hybrid Engines

The other engines available in the new C-HR are also hybrids, but they cannot be plugged in. The lowliest of these is a front-wheel-drive 1.8 with 138 hp (140 PS) that needs 9.9 seconds to hit 62 mph. Stepping up to the 2.0-liter version lifts output to 194 hp (197 PS), and it is the only C-HR available with all-wheel drive. Going for the all-paw drops the 62 mph sprint from 8.1 to 7.9 seconds.

Special Editions

The GR Sport Premiere Edition is a special edition that comes with a unique grille, 20-inch wheels, GR badges, sports seats with GR logos, and a head-up display and JBL premium audio system. The High Premiere Edition loses the GR details but adds perforated leather seats and a panoramic roof.

Availability

The new C-HR is available for reservation in Europe now, with a starting price of around €35,000 ($38,200). However, the C-HR has been discontinued in North America, with its place effectively taken by the less funky but far roomier Corolla Cross.

Conclusion

The second-generation Toyota C-HR is a hybrid crossover with a PHEV option that boasts modern design, advanced technology, and a 100% hybrid lineup. The plug-in powertrain is available for the first time on a C-HR and uses geofencing technology to recognize when the vehicle has entered a low-emissions zone and will automatically switch to EV mode if there is sufficient charge. While the C-HR is not available in North America, it is an excellent option for those looking for a stylish and eco-friendly crossover in Europe.
