Since its inception, the Ford GT has always been at the forefront of American performance cars. From the iconic GT40
of the mid-20th century to the technologically advanced GT of today, each generation has made its mark in the
automotive world. To determine how each GT compares to one another, Carwow has organized a series of races
featuring all three generations.
The GT40 Mk III: A Lightweight Road Car
The GT40 Mk III, a road-only successor to the legendary Le Mans-winning Mk II, may surprise some with its modest
specifications. Equipped with a 4.7L V8 engine, it produces 306 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. However, weighing
only 2,712 lb, this lightweight car showcases its agility on the racetrack.
The 2005 GT: A Tribute to the Original
Created to celebrate Ford’s 100th anniversary, the 2005 GT pays homage to its predecessor. Powered by a 5.4L
supercharged V8 engine, it delivers an impressive 550 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. Weighing 3,351 lb, this
commemorative model captures the spirit of the original GT.
The 2017 GT: Power and Performance
The 2017 GT may have deviated from tradition by adopting a twin-turbo V6 engine, but its performance speaks for
itself. With a weight of 3,274 lb, it is the most powerful of the three generations, boasting an impressive 647
hp and 550 lb-ft of torque. Its advanced transmission ensures quick acceleration and a thrilling driving
experience.
Race Results
In the drag race, both the 2005 GT and the 2017 GT had a close start, but the newer model’s additional power and
quicker transmission allowed it to take the lead. The same outcome occurred in the roll race, with the 2017 GT
pulling away even faster.
It comes as no surprise that the GT40 fell behind in both races. Apart from its power disadvantage, its status as
a priceless antique makes it less likely to be pushed to its limits due to its value and fragility. However, we
commend the Petersen Museum for preserving this important piece of history and the driver for showcasing its
capabilities.
