Koenigsegg’s Impressive Engineering: From Powertrains to Transmissions

Koenigsegg Engineering

Introduction

Koenigsegg, the Swedish hypercar manufacturer, is known not only for its impressive hypercars but also for its groundbreaking engineering. Unlike larger automotive conglomerates, Koenigsegg takes pride in developing its own components, from powertrains to transmissions.

The Light Speed Transmission

One of Koenigsegg’s notable achievements is the development of the Light Speed Transmission. This unique transmission features seven clutches and eliminates traditional selector forks, collars, and synchronizers. To provide a detailed insight into this innovative transmission, Koenigsegg has released a video showcasing the manufacturing process at their facility.

The Jesko Engine

The video not only highlights the Light Speed Transmission but also provides insights into the 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine used in the Jesko hypercar. Each engine is meticulously assembled by a single worker over the course of one week. The same facility also assembles the special version of this V8 engine used in the Gemera hypercar.

The Impressive Power and Design

The Jesko’s engine is a modified version of the Agera engine, featuring four valves per cylinder and a 180-degree flat-plane crankshaft. With E85 fuel, the engine produces a staggering 1,600 horsepower. Despite its immense power, the engine weighs less than 200 kg (440 lbs) and meets all global emissions requirements.
