Rivian Factory Fire Damages Over 50 R1S and R1T Models

Over the weekend, a fire broke out in the parking lot of Rivian’s factory in Normal, Illinois, damaging approximately 50 brand new Rivian R1S and R1T models. Fortunately, the fire was contained to the parking lot and did not spread to the production facility.

Cause of the Fire Under Investigation

A spokesperson for Rivian stated that the cause of the fire is still being investigated. The Normal Fire Department was called to the scene and was able to extinguish the flames. No injuries have been reported as a result of the incident.

Previous Fire Incidents Involving Rivian Vehicles

This is not the first fire-related incident involving Rivian vehicles. In July, three all-electric Amazon delivery vans built by Rivian caught fire at an Amazon fulfillment center in Houston, Texas. While the cause of that fire has not been officially determined, Rivian confirmed that one of the vans was plugged into a charger but not actively charging at the time of the incident. The company also stated that the high-voltage battery was not the cause of the fire.
